Introduction
Type Outlook is the subsequent topic to Type Perspective. If you are new to this topic, do refer to the Introduction of Type Perspective to gain a more comprehensive understanding of Type Outlook.
Overview
As mentioned previously in Type Perspective, our decisions are affected by the primal desire for either variety or certainty. This preference in desire forms the Explorer and Builder Personality Classes, resulting in different Type Perspectives.
This section, Type Outlook, will delve into how the Explorer and Builder Personality Classes can be further specified based on different Class Methods. While each Personality Class has a corresponding desire, individuals within the class may prefer different approaches to the same desire. This preference determines their Type Outlook.
Individuals may prefer using Sensing to process concrete realities, or Intuition to process abstract concepts. This gives rise to the classifications of Sensors (S) and Intuitives (N).
Sensor
Sensors (S) are individuals who prioritize making observations based on denotative facts. As such, they tend to focus on what is concrete, most noticeably on details and evidence that are trackable in reality, all of which are forms of data and facts.
These individuals have a Sensing Function as either their Dominant Function or Supportive Function. Sensors who are Explorers have Extraverted Sensing (SE), whereas Sensors who are Builders have Introverted Sensing (SI).
Intuitive
Intuitives (N) are individuals who prioritize making observations based on connotative concepts. As such, they tend to focus on what is abstract, most noticeably on ideas and connections that are conceived in the mind, all of which are forms of patterns and concepts.
These individuals have an Intuition Function as either their Dominant Function or Supportive Function. Intuitives who are Explorers have Extraverted Intuition (NE), whereas Intuitives who are Builders have Introverted Intuition (NI).
Mechanism
For those who are new to Jungian typology, a Cognitive Function is a specific psychological pattern that utilizes varying cognitive processes to achieve a desired purpose. There are a total of eight Cognitive Functions, each prioritized differently among different individuals.
Under Type Outlook, the Observing and Exploring Functions are further categorized into Sensing Functions and Intuition Functions as described above. Depending on which Type Outlook is prioritized, it will fall among an individual's top two functions. In turn, the Type Outlook that is disregarded will fall among the bottom two functions.
For example, the Specialist archetype is a Sensor. As such, the Specialist prioritizes Sensing and has a Sensing Function among its top two functions. Automatically, the Intuition Function is disregarded and falls among the bottom two functions.
In contrast, the Advocate archetype is an Intuitive. As such, the Advocate prioritizes Intuition and has an Intuition Function among its top two functions. Automatically, the Sensing Function is disregarded and falls among the bottom two functions.
Unlike the Personality Classes, there are no distinctions between the top two functions in terms of Type Outlook. The Specialist is simply a Sensor whereas the Advocate is simply an Intuitive, regardless of whether their functions are a Dominant or Supportive Function.
